Program Notes

Tӕngle brings together movement, sound, spoken text, and fiber arts to feel our way through the collective histories of commons and enclosure and personal histories of abundance and scarcity.

The movement in the show was choreographed and/or improvisationally scored by Miryam Coppersmith in collaboration with the cast. Special thanks to cast members Kimya Jackson, Shannon Brooks, and Leigh Huster who have been developing this project with Miryam since its first iterations two years ago.

Sound in the show was curated by Musical Director Maddie Rabin and Miryam Coppersmith. Credits here:

Spoken Text Credits:

Inspirations for the piece include Silvia Federici's Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation and Kenwyn Smith's The Abundance/Scarcity Paradox.

The seed of this performance was planted eight years ago when Lead Artist Miryam Coppersmith read Silvia Federici's Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation. Federici's Feminist Marxist analysis of the witch hunts and the beginning threads of modern capitalism opened up questions for Miryam. What does abundance looks like in a crowded world? What does safety looks like when we let the world and each other be wild? What do we do now? Bringing these questions into the room with a cast of collaborators- performers and designers- gave rise to this performance.
