ArtDates is an attempt to stop the endless cycle of meeting awesome collaborators, talking about making something and then never having the time or coordination to make it happen. I meet with a collaborator for one day and we make something from scratch. Whatever is made at the end of the Date is the piece and we create some artifact (video, performance with an audience, audio, etc.) to mark that.
I had my second Art Date with Derek Freeh in November. We were both having some serious relationship feels and decided to talk about them with this piece. In the process, we discovered some parallels between Contact Improvisation exercises and relationships (the cyclical nature of bodysurfing mimics the cycles we can get into when in conflict with someone, etc.). We mused about how so much of the CI out there is entangled in romantic relationships. It felt refreshing to be talking about relationships and dancing with a platonic friend (and at the same time!) Then, I threw in a surprise, inspired by All Songs Considered. Hope you enjoy.
